Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand 1/2024: 3

This contribution analyses the consequences of varying health care systems on mortality differences in the German-speaking areas of Central Europe (Austria, Germany, South Tyrol and wide parts of Switzerland). Based on official cause-of-death statistics and using the concept of avoidable mortality, the focus of the analysis was on trends and differences in deaths below the age of 75 that were either a) amenable to health care (through early detection or adequate treatment) or b) preventable (through effective primary prevention). The results show that the efficiency of inter-sectoral health policies in providing timely and adequate health care and preventing risk-relevant behaviour has room for improvement in all German regions, especially in the East and North.
