Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, only few studies on excess mortality have considered both regional and cause-of-death variation. Germany is particularly interesting in this context because it was hit very differently by the pandemic across regions. To gain more insights into the potential causes of the spatial variation in excess mortality, we conducted a detailed regional analysis of mortality by age, sex, month and cause of death.
