In recent years, employment during retirement has gained importance in public, political and academic discussions. The description of the decision-making process in favour of or against continued employment after retirement has so far been insufficient in the German context.
As starting point for the analysis of the decision-making process, the book employs a heuristic that is based on the Rubicon model of action phases. In addition to the description of specific constellations of formal and informal activity in each phase, social, economic and health conditions that support or restrict desired or necessary work of retirees are also examined. This allows a differentiated view of the process of transitioning between work and retirement, and may serve as orientation for the political, societal and especially the individual shaping of the third age.
