The number of international migrants and refugees as well as internally displaced persons reached an unprecedented level in 2015. Compared to the growing global population, however, the share of international migrants has hardly increased during the past 25 years. The paper discusses the rising importance of south-south migration and its changing structure and dynamics. More and more migrants and refugees are heading into neighbouring countries. While the humanitarian and economic challenges for the affected countries are generally acknowledged, a positive impact of transnational south-south migration, e.g. in terms of remittances and transfer of human capital, anticipated by many development strategies, has yet to be confirmed.
