Using the National Educational Panel Study and the German Life History Study, the present paper analyzes the shifts in intragenerational social mobility in West Germany across the career entry cohorts 1932–1989. As an analytical approach, growth curve models are utilized. The empirical results illustrate an increase of social prestige at the initial placement within the occupational system over the studied cohorts. However, across the cohorts 1932–1969 there is no difference regarding shifts in the social position over the occupational career. Against the background of changing opportunity structures, smaller increases of prestige across the career are found among younger cohorts (1970–1989). Moreover, the analyses indicate a rise in the heterogeneity of careers over the cohorts.
