Abstract: This chapter aims to briefly illustrate the content and design of the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS), as well as important background information belonging with it, and to describe the weaknesses and potentials of this source of data. The GGS is a panel survey that is structured in terms of international comparison and used to improve the understanding and explanation of demographic developments on the basis of individual modes of conduct. In organisational terms, it is affiliated with the Generations and Gender Programme, which in turn is coordinated by UNECE. As a result of its harmonisation, it can be compared at international level and is accessible to the scientific community. Subsequently, deviations between the German GGS survey and official statistics are touched on with regard to the parity distribution of live births by birth years. This chapter is completed with examples of analyses with the GGS, using which the most important core areas and potentials are to be briefly demonstrated, thus providing an idea of the possibilities for the processing of academic questions.
