Debt counsellors work in close contact with clients who are under extreme material, psychological and social stress. Given these job characteristics, it may be assumed that debt counsellors – like other employees in human services – bear an increased risk of developing job burnout. The study described here was carried out to determine the frequency of job burnout among debt counsellors in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is the first systematic study of the health status of debt counsellors in Germany. Other objectives were to identify parameters influencing the risk of job burnout and to derive useful preventive measures.
