What demographic consequences have there been as a result of the overseas migration movements of Germany since reunification? The official statistics leave unanswered some questions relating to the demographic consequences of immigration in the spatial context. In this article, using ex-post model calculations the demographic impact for the 16 German Federal Länder from 1991 to 2004 induced by external migration will be quantified. The results show that the external migration effect in all Federal Länder is having a positive impact on the population stock and the numbers of births, and is softening the effect of ageing. The age structure effect of external migration on the population stock is negative in Eastern Germany, Lower Saxony and the Saarland, whilst the other Länder have benefited from external migration in terms of their age structure.
