Motivations, Determining Factors and Impacts of the Emigration and Return Migration of German Citizens
The Internationally Mobile study (German: International Mobil) was conducted by the BiB in cooperation with the SVR research division and the University of Duisburg-Essen. It contributes to our understanding of the international mobility of German citizens by using an innovative methodological approach to gain access to potential respondents. The study measures both the mobility of German citizens who have emigrated from Germany (emigrants) and that of German citizens who have returned to Germany fafter a certain period abroad (returnees).
The study focuses on three main aspects: first, on the socio-structural characteristics of internationally mobile Germans, second, on the motivation for individual mobility decisions, and third, on the implications of international mobility for individual living conditions such as family life, professional career, and well-being and life satisfaction. In total, the analysis from 2014 includes responses from almost 1,700 individuals; of these almost 800 were emigrants and approximately 900 returnees.
