Age- and Sex-Specific Migration Patterns in Eastern Germany

Content and Objectives

Emigration from Eastern to Western Germany dominated internal migration and population development in the years following the Fall of the Wall in 1989. While in the meantime East- to West-migration lost importance small-scale migration within Eastern Germany became more prevalent. Today, this results in an antagonistic regional development especially between rural regions and urban areas with universities.

The project aims to analyse internal migration patterns within Eastern Germany. Its main objective is the investigation of age- and sex-specific migration patterns and its influence on regional population development and social structure. Special attention is devoted to the situation of young women in Eastern Germany.
