Regional Fertility Analyses

Content and Objectives

There are considerable regional differences in fertility. This is true for period- as well as cohort-specific fertility rates. With the German census of 2011, the possibilities of spatial analyses down to the district level have increased significantly. For the first time, cohort-specific fertility rates have been measured for Germany at the district level in this project.

Regional differences may be the result of different regional conditions on the one hand and compositional effects on the other, e.g. a different population structure in terms of educational and migration background. Therefore, this project addresses the central question of how much can be explained by the regional setting compared to compositional effects. In the analyses, regional factors include labour market, economic performance, childcare, sex ratios, recreational areas, traffic and housing space.
