Objectives

European comparative study of attitudes, experiences and preferences about having children and about child-friendly policies.

Description of Work

  1. On the basis of the international PPAS standardised database, resulting from the national surveys a European comparative analysis will be made of:
    - attitudes, experiences and preferences about having children and family size;
    - attitudes, experiences and preferences about the meaning of parenthood and parenting;
    - opinions about government policies supporting parenthood and child care, more particularly with respect to preferences for resource persons in childcare, use and availability of childcare facilities, child allowances and parental leave.
  2. The data of the international PPAS on individual attitudes, experiences and preferences with respect to children will be related to the evaluation of the policy measures that were taken to assist families in having and raising children.
  3. The international PPAS data on children will be analysed according to the socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the respondents and the values they entail: age and sex, household and family characteristics, education, activity and income, religion, urbanisation of residence, values in life.
  4. The results of the analysis on children will also be studied in relation to the findings on the other major research issues studied in the project: gender roles, family formation, work and family life, intergenerational solidarity.
  5. The results of the international PPAS analysis on children will be related to the findings of the Delphi-, focus group-, and contextual parts of the project.
