The BiB invites you to the lecture series on November 20 from 11:00 to 12:15. Prof. Clara H. Mulder presents her paper “The role of social networks in internal migration”.
Clara H. Mulder is Professor of Demography at the Population Research Centre of the University of Groningen. Her research interests include internal migration, household change and family relationships. Her current work focuses on the roles of siblings and school peers in young adults’ life events.
Abstract
Previous research has emphasized the role of work and education in internal migration (long-distance moves within countries), and the role of this migration in the functioning of labour markets. However, this work has mostly overlooked the role of social networks in internal migration. I present work from the recently completed FamilyTies project (www.rug.nl/FamilyTies), which investigated the roles of nonresident family members in migration, both as anchors (keeping individuals and households from migrating and thus inducing staying) and as beacons (attracting migration). It also addressed motivations for migration and staying as well as individual labour-market outcomes associated with migration and staying related to family ties. I further present an outline of a new research project on the roles of siblings and school peers in young adults’ internal migration as well as other important life events: leaving the parental home, educational transitions and labour-market entry.
