The dataset presents survey data and generated characteristics of over 11,000 refugees of Ukrainian nationality aged between 18 and 70. They took part in the first representative social science repeat survey of Ukrainian refugees in Germany to date. The first wave was initially conducted with the participation of the BiB from August to October 2022. The second survey wave took place between January and March 2023.

The IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP survey “Refugees from Ukraine in Germany” is based on a random sample. First, around 100 municipalities in Germany were selected from the Central Register of Foreigners in which many Ukrainian refugees are registered. Refugees were randomly selected from these municipalities on the basis of data from the population registers. The surveys themselves were conducted by the Institute for Applied Social Sciences (infas) using an online questionnaire; alternatively, a paper questionnaire could also be completed.
“The aim of the project, which was launched in 2022 with other partners, is to research the individual consequences of forced migration, including for family structures, health, well-being and the labour market situation,” explains BiB scientist and project manager Dr. Andreas Ette.
In this way, the needs and problems associated with refugee migration are to be mapped on the basis of high-quality data and also made analysable at the level of individual life courses. Against the background of the specific socio-demographic characteristics of Ukrainian refugees, the use of childcare and other educational programmes for children and young people also plays a special role. The focus is also on questions about future prospects and any planned family reunification or intentions to return.
The survey was conducted by four partner organisations: the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) and the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW). The project ties in with the German Family Demography Panel Study FReDA based at BiB and the “IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees”.
