Invitation • 29.02.2024BiB Population Research Series

The BiB invites you to the lecture series on March 20, 2024 from 11:00 to 12:15. Prof. Daniele Vignoli presents his paper “Can Policy Reforms Enhance Fertility? An Ex-Ante Evaluation through Factorial Survey Experiments”.

Daniele Vignoli is Professor of Demography at the University of Florence and President of the Italian Association for Population Studies. His research addresses family demography, social demography, and the life course. In 2017, he acquired an ERC Consolidator Grant on Economic Uncertainty and Fertility in Europe. Currently, he is the scientific coordinator of the Research Programme Age-It, Ageing Well in an Ageing Society funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Abstract

This talk discusses the theoretical and empirical drawbacks of existing studies on the family policies/fertility nexus. It also proposes a novel perspective to assess the role of family policies on fertility through the use of factorial survey experiments (FSE). Results of a FSE carried out for Italy show that the availability of full-time, public childcare services seems more relevant than higher child benefits, whereas more generous and gender-equal parental leaves are perceived as less important. Results also suggest that marginal changes in single policy levers are most likely ineffective and that a couple’s socioeconomic status is perceived as more important than family policies for fertility decisions.

Location

The event will take place on the 3rd floor of the BiB in presence and online as a Webex conference.
