New Project at BiB • 22.08.2023Bremen Initiative to Foster Early Childhood Development (BRISE)

The effects and structures of early childhood development are being investigated in the long-term study BRISE, which has been scientifically accompanied by a cost-efficiency analysis at the BiB since July 1, 2023. The acronym BRISE stands for the "Bremen Initiative to Foster Early Childhood Development."

"The aim of the study is to gather findings for the future design of early childhood support in the first years of life," explains BiB director and scientific project manager Univ. Prof. Dr. C. Katharina Spiess. She is accompanying the study together with BiB scientists Dr. Sophia Schmitz and Lidia Gutu at the BiB.

BiB investigates efficiency of measures and effects

The focus of the subproject "Cost-effectiveness analyses within the framework of BRISE," conducted at the institute is on the efficiency of the individual early childhood education and care services of BRISE, as well as the funding chain as a whole. "Our cost-effectiveness analyses allow us to contrast the impact of the programs with the resources invested in them," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Spiess.

Mothers and fathers in Bremen take center stage

The project is supported by the families who participate in the initiative. In particular, the focus is on mothers and fathers with a challenging life situation who could benefit from participating in the project. The insights gained through the project will ultimately be helpful not only for Bremen, says Prof. Dr. Spiess: "Other communities will also benefit from the findings."

The BRISE project is a joint study of the Senate of the Hanseatic City of Bremen, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Jacobs Foundation, and a large number of scientists.
