Abstract

International research shows that immigrant and multilingual adolescents often have higher expectations for their success in school and higher career aspirations than monolinguals. We examine the aspiration-achievement paradox in Germany using the "Mehrsprachigkeit im Zeitverlauf" (MEZ) data. In MEZ, the educational aspirations and expectations of students from three language groups (monolingual German, multilingual Russian, multilingual Turkish) as well as those of their parents were collected. As possible determinants, we focus on the young people's linguistic capital and cognitive competence, the influence of their parents, and the interaction of these factors.

Location

The event will take place on the 3rd floor of the BiB in presence.
