The BiB invites you to the lecture series on January 25, 2023 from 11:00 to 12:15. Prof. Irena Kogan will present her paper “Selectivity in migration and destination choices of Ukrainian refugees: Evidence from the OneUA survey”.
Irena Kogan is a professor of comparative sociology at the University of Mannheim. Her research interests include ethnicity and migration, social and ethnic stratifi cation and social inequalities. She is PI of the ERC project “Partnership Formation in the Context of Refugee Migration” (PARFORM).
Since the beginning of the Russian full-scale aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, almost 6 million Ukrainians have been resettled within Ukraine and almost 8 million sought protection in neighboring and more distant countries by the beginning of 2023. The aim of the presentation is, first, we compare the socio-demographic profiles of stayers, internally displaced persons and refugees from Ukraine. Second, we explore determinants of migration moves and destination choices focusing in particular on the role of individual productivity-relevant resources, such as education and economic situation, unobservable characteristics in connection to war-related political positions and country-specific pull factors, such as destination countries’ institutional and structural characteristics. The findings are discussed in light of economic theories of migration and their adaptations to the case of refugee migration.
The event will take place on the 3rd floor of the BiB in presence.
