BiB Data and Technical Reports 2/2021 • 21.06.2021Documentation of the Second Wave of GERPS

The publication documents the survey design of the second wave and the instruments. About 7,000 German emigrants and return migrants participated in the second wave. The project’s main goal is to investigate the individual consequences of international migration across the life course for persons from economically developed countries.

A particular interest is to cover four crucial dimensions of the life course: employment and income, partners and families, health and wellbeing, and participation and social relations. GERPS yields a unique basis for studying these topics in longitudinal perspective because general surveys like the Socio-economic Panel omit this group either partially or entirely.

Next to the survey design the report discusses the development of the instrument and online interview methods. The second wave yields additional information on the employment biography and social origin. Moreover, the report documents technical, cognitive, and realistic pre-tests as well as standards regarding data processing and weights. Finally, it documents generated variables and fundamental decisions regarding the Scientific Use File (SUF).

The SUF of the second wave will be published shortly by GESIS and the SUF of the first wave is available here.
