TransFAR Survey • 28.01.2021Fieldwork of TransFAR Successfully Completed

The fieldwork of the survey Forced Migration and Transnational Family Arrangements - Eritrean and Syrian Refugees in Germany (TransFAR) was successfully completed in October 2020 with a pleasingly high level of participation. In total, more than 1,450 women and men from Eritrea and Syria were interviewed throughout Germany.

The BiB, in collaboration with the BAMF Research Centre, conducted a nationwide survey of refugees from Eritrea and Syria between August and October 2020. People with Eritrean or Syrian citizenship who fled to Germany from Eritrea and Syria in the past seven years between the ages of 18 and 45 were invited to participate in the survey. In total, more than 1,450 people took part, half with Eritrean and half with Syrian citizenship. In addition, 50 percent of the participants were women and 50 percent men. Among other things, the respondents were interviewed about the whereabouts of their family members, their family relationships, and their social contacts in Germany.

First results in spring 2021

The participants were randomly selected, based on the Central Register of Foreigners, and interviewed personally by the survey institute KANTAR in a ‘face-to-face’ design. Participation in the survey was of course voluntary, anonymous and in compliance with strict Corona hygiene measures. “We are already very excited about the first results of the survey, which are expected to be published in the spring of this year,” announces BiB researcher Dr. Elisabeth K. Kraus.
