Transitions and Old Age Potential (TOP) Study | 01.07.2020The Generation of People over 60 and the Transition to Retirement

A growing number of retired older people are taking up gainful employment or voluntary work. This means that the phase of living in old age has changed considerably. How older couples are planning their retirement and what activities they are pursuing was the topic of a BiB press conference held in Wiesbaden on 25 June 2020 to launch the new brochure From Retirement to Un-retirement and the policy brief Retiring Together? Retirement as a Project for Two-Income Couples. The publications present the latest findings of the BiB Survey Transitions and Old Age Potential (TOP).

How dynamically the retirement phase of life will continue to develop in the future illustrates, among other things, the numbers of new pensioners over time, emphasised the director of BiB, Prof. Dr. Norbert F. Schneider. Within the next ten years, there will be twice as many pensioners as ten years ago as a result of demographic developments. In addition to demography, mortality also plays a major role: “This increase is mainly caused by the reduced mortality of people over 65 years of age,” explained Prof. Schneider.
