New Research Director • 01.09.2017Nikola Sander Has Been Appointed as New Research Director at the BiB

On September 1, 2017, Dr. Nikola Sander took over the coordination of the Institute’s research activities in the area of migration and mobility. The BiB is pleased to welcome Nikola, who is an experienced migration and population researcher, as a new member of the board of directors.

Prior to joining the BiB, Nikola Sander held a position as assistant professor for population geography at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. Her research focuses on quantitative analyses and visualisations of international and internal migration flows.

After studying geography in Regensburg, Tübingen and Adelaide, Australia, Nikola Sander completed her doctorate dissertation on the causes and consequences of internal migration at the University of Queensland, Australia. In 2010, she became a research scholar at the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) focussing on global trends in international migration.

During her time at the VID, Nikola Sander developed the interactive data visualisation “The Global Flow of People” together with her former colleagues Guy Abel and Ramon Bauer. The findings that this data visualisation is based upon were published in the renowned journal “Science” in 2014.

„I’m delighted to take up this new role at the BiB and to further develop interactive visualisations, which help us to communicate complex scientific issues like international migration and refugee movements to political decision-makers and the general public,” Nikola Sander said.

“My aim is to strengthen the research in the area of migration and mobility at the BiB, to expand international collaborations and to provide a robust scientific basis for political decision making through internationally competitive research,” Sander continued.

Appointment to the Institute‘s Board of Directors

Dr. Nikola Sander takes over from Dr. Jürgen Dorbritz, who is retiring in February 2018. Together with Research Directors Dr. Evelyn Grünheid (“Demographic Change and Ageing”) and Dr. Martin Bujard (“Family and Fertility”), she is responsible for the Institute’s research activities. Together with Professor Nobert F. Schneider and Silvia Ruppenthal, Head of Administration, they form the board of directors.
