Global Burden of Disease • 11.10.2016What Influences Life Expectancy and How Healthy Are We? New Insights Published in The Lancet
Since 1990 the Global Burden of Disease Study (GDB) provides data on worldwide trends of health and causes of death. The current results were presented to the public on 7 October 2016 in a live-stream. Three researchers of the BiB were involved in this study.
The new report was published in a special issue of the renowned scientific journal The Lancet. Its main results were presented to the public in Washington, D.C., on 7 October 2016 by the World Bank, The Lancet and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) of the University of Washington (Seattle) via live-stream. The study which was carried out by more than 1,800 researchers in over 120 countries not only analyses the causes of death but also the living conditions of every country of the world. Thereby, the observed trends and comparisons of populations are to help understand the changing challanges for human health in the 21st century.
For the first time, the new report compares countries with regard to the combination of income, education and fertility. In this study, the three BiB researchers Prof. Ulrich Mueller, Dr. Andrea Werdecker and Dr. Ronny Westerman (of Research Group 3.3: Mortality Follow-Up of the German National Cohort) were involved in all mortality-relevant articles published in the special issue of The Lancet.
Furthermore, Dr. Andrea Werdecker was chosen out of more than 1,800 involved scientists and appointed as one of 26 members to the scientific council of the GBD study for the period of 1 October 2016 until 30 September 2019.
