Such a follow-up survey is important to study individual potential and transitions to retirement prospectively.

The study focuses on the explanation of labour market participation in late adulthood using a theoretical approach based on individual action.

The TOP study was started in 2011 together with several cooperation partners from different Universities (Jacobs University Bremen, Leuphana University Lüneburg, SRH University Berlin and Columbia University New York). A questionnaire was developed until the end of 2012 that mirrors the interdisciplinary perspective of the TOP study. During the field work phase of the first wave in the first quarter of 2013, 5,002 randomly selected persons of the german-speaking resident population between 55 and 70 years of age could be interviewed.

The results of the first wave were published in a brochure and in the form of an edited volume. Moreover, articles based on the data of TOP were published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g. Zeitschrift für Gerontologie und Geriatrie). The coordination of the study is carried out by the BiB in both waves.
